Montmorency Cherry as a super food.

Montmorency Cherry (Prunus Cerasus), also known as acid Montmorency Cherry, are specific types of sour cherries native to the USA, Canada and France.

Named after the Montmorency area of France, this unique variety of Cherry is rich in naturally occurring phytonutrients including: Anthocyanins and melatonin which have been associated with a wide range of health benefits.

Let's check out what makes this unique variety of cherries unique by reviewing the studies and health benefits of the Montmorency Cherry.

Full of Antioxidants

Think of a brownish fruit or avocado. What you are seeing is an oxidative damage, a process in which cells use the available oxygen and produce a harmful through the product called free radicals. Your body produces free radicals as a result of normal metabolism functions, and these are natural responses to environmental toxins, inflammation and exercise. High levels of free radicals can lead to more than 60 different diseases and health conditions, including accelerated aging.

Antioxidants are nature's response to oxidative damage as they help neutralize the harmful effects of free radicals. Your body can make some antioxidants, but it relies on a diet rich in antioxidant foods to protect your body against free radicals, and this is even more applicable given our highly toxic environments.

Montmorency Cherries are packed with antioxidants and have an ORAC value of 47,000 (per 100g of powder), having one of the best antioxidant scores, outperforming red wine and dark chocolate.

Montmorency cherries: One of the richest sources of anthocyanins

Anthocyanins are naturally occurring pigments, which give fruits and vegetables rich in red, purple and blue. They are called flavonoids and also have antioxidant effects. But in addition to fighting free radicals, anthocyanins may also have anti-inflammatory, anti-viral and anti-cancer properties

What makes these Cherries special is that they contain the highest concentration of anthocyanins with an average of 30-40mg / 100g of fruit.

They are more than cherries, raspberries, blueberries and blueberries!

Can Cherries Help Control Gout?

Gout is a painful, arthritic condition of the joints, which has been linked to elevated blood levels of uric acid. Genetics, diet, lifestyle, alcohol consumption, overweight and exposure to lead may increase the risk of gout in genetically susceptible individuals.

Unfortunately there is no known cure for gout but it can be alleviated through a variety of treatments including non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, corticosteroids and medicines that reduce uric acid levels. Anti-inflammatory diet and consumption of Cherries based on research, suggesting that the ingestion of Cherries inhibits cyclooxygenase-1 and -2 enzymes, which are the targets of anti-inflammatory drugs.

Let's check the results of the available Cherries / Montmorency research studies:

It all begins with Ludwig W. Blau, MD, who published an article in the Texas Reports on Biology and Medicine (vol.8) in 1950, outlining how drinking Montmorency Cherry juice can help relieve gout pain on the finger and helping to provide relief to their arthritis and gout patients.

Patients in the study had lower levels of uric acid in the blood, which are now associated with the onset and progression of gout. A study from the USDA Human Nutrition Research Center at the University of California, found that consuming two servings of 280g of Cherries after a nightly fasting exhibits a 15% reduction in uric acid levels and reduces levels of nitric oxide. The researchers concluded that the "compounds in Cherries can inhibit inflammatory salts" associated with gout.

In 4 randomized, placebo-controlled cross-over study of obesity among participants, researchers found that Montmorency Cherry juice can significantly reduce uric acid levels and biomarkers of inflammation.

Another study performed at the University of Northumbria found that Montmorency Cherries juice reduced blood levels of uric acid and relative protein-C, a measure of inflammation.

Finally, in a cross-over study of 633 participants, Boston University Medical Center found that consuming at least 10 Cherries in one day reduced the risk of gout attacks by 35%.

According to the Arthritis Foundation, these early studies show the promise that daily consumption of Cherries could help reduce the pain and recurrence associated with this painful condition.

Can Cherries Help Osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease, which can affect any joint, but occurs mostly in the knees, hips, lower back, neck, knees and toes. Cartilage usually provides a smooth sliding surface to these joints, but in the case of osteoarthritis the cartilage disintegrates, causing pain, swelling and inflammation that causes more damage to it.

In a study published in the journal Osteoarthritis and Cartilage, researchers at VA Medical Center found that patients who consumed two cups (240ml) of Cherries juice for 6 weeks showed improved pain, stiffness and physical function, as well as decrease in the relative high C protein sensitivity (CRP), a marker of inflammation.

In a short 21-day study published in the Journal of Food Studies, individuals (females) with osteoarthritis who drink Montmorency Cherry juice, demonstrate a statistically significant reduction in serum biomarkers (CRP). In another study, researchers at the Baylor Research Institute gave Montmorency Cherry capsules to patients with osteoarthritis of the knee. After 8 weeks, more than half of the subjects had improvement in pain and function.

Although not definitely a cure, these early studies are demonstrating that Cherries, especially the acidic variety like Montmorency Cherries, could benefit the sufferers.

Can Cherries Help with Post-Recovery Muscle Exercises?

In the field of elite sports performance, coaches are always keen to improve their athletes to the limit, to allow them to be stronger and to achieve better results than their competitors. High intensity or prolonged physical activity can cause muscle damage, resulting in pain, inflammation, and oxidative stress. As a result, the muscle recovers after a workout if you are an elite athlete or simply want to get the most ideal gains after a workout to create or break your progress.

Early studies showed promising muscle damage and reduced inflammation benefits related to the anthocyanins antioxidants found in cherries. In a random double-blind trial, runners participated in a 24-hour ticketing race and drank 355ml of Cherries juice twice a day for 7 days before the event. While both groups reported increased post-race pain, the Montmorency Cherry Juice group reported a significantly lower increase in pain after it.

In another study, recreational marathoners were assigned to also consume Montmorency Cherry Juice or a placebo 5 days earlier, the same day and 48 hours after a marathon run.

The muscle injury markers were examined before and after the race. The group that consumed the juice had faster recovery of isometric strength and lower inflammation, demonstrating an accelerated recovery followed by this strenuous exercise.

In a smaller study, a research team verified the effects of repeated arm exercise (eccentric elbow flexion exercise), which normally induces muscle injury. One group drank 350ml of Cherries juice twice a day for 8 days before exercise while the other had a placebo.

Over the next four days after training, the arm strength of the placebo group had declined by an average of 22%, while those who consumed Montmorency Cherry juice decreased by only 4%.

Researchers at the University of Exeter studied the recovery time of 10 athletes, performing intensive force exercises. One group consumed one Montmorency concentrate, the other a generic isoenergetic fruit concentrate for 7 days before and 48h after exercise. The group that consumed the Montmorency Cherries concentrate exhibited an improved recovery of isometric muscle strength.

What is the best way to take advantage of the health benefits of Cherries?

There are many varieties of cherries to choose from, and while most people are used to consuming cherries, when it comes to nutritional studies, we find that the most searched Montmorency Cherry type is the Cherries Montmorency variety, with more than 50 studies up to date.
