It all begins with Ludwig W. Blau, MD, who published an article in the Texas Reports on Biology and Medicine (vol.8) in 1950, outlining how drinking Montmorency Cherry juice can help relieve gout pain on the finger and helping to provide relief to their arthritis and gout patients.
Patients in the study had lower levels of uric acid in the blood, which are now associated with the onset and progression of gout. A study from the USDA Human Nutrition Research Center at the University of California, found that consuming two servings of 280g of Cherries after a nightly fasting exhibits a 15% reduction in uric acid levels and reduces levels of nitric oxide. The researchers concluded that the "compounds in Cherries can inhibit inflammatory salts" associated with gout.
In 4 randomized, placebo-controlled cross-over study of obesity among participants, researchers found that Montmorency Cherry juice can significantly reduce uric acid levels and biomarkers of inflammation.
Another study performed at the University of Northumbria found that Montmorency Cherries juice reduced blood levels of uric acid and relative protein-C, a measure of inflammation.
Finally, in a cross-over study of 633 participants, Boston University Medical Center found that consuming at least 10 Cherries in one day reduced the risk of gout attacks by 35%.

Can Cherries Help Osteoarthritis?
Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease, which can affect any joint, but occurs mostly in the knees, hips, lower back, neck, knees and toes. Can Cherries Help with Post-Recovery Muscle Exercises?

In a smaller study, a research team verified the effects of repeated arm exercise (eccentric elbow flexion exercise), which normally induces muscle injury. One group drank 350ml of Cherries juice twice a day for 8 days before exercise while the other had a placebo.

Researchers at the University of Exeter studied the recovery time of 10 athletes, performing intensive force exercises.
